About this place
A small square brick temple with a curvilinear tower, built in the Bengali rekha-deul style and rare in Manipur for its age and form. It gives Bishnupur district its name and is now a protected monument. The surrounding tank and the quiet compound take fifteen minutes and are worth the stop on the way to Loktak.
The history
Built around 1467 during the reign of King Kyamba, following the gift of a Vishnu image from the Pong kingdom of present-day Myanmar; it is among the oldest surviving structures in the valley.
How to reach
27 km from Imphal on NH-150; every Moirang-bound shared sumo passes through Bishnupur town.
Local tips
- Ask the caretaker to point out the original brick courses against the restored sections.
- Remove footwear before the inner platform.
- Combine with Loktak and the INA Memorial in one southward run.
