About this place
On 14 April 1944 Colonel Shaukat Malik of the Indian National Army hoisted the INA flag at Moirang, the first time the flag of a free India flew over Indian territory. The complex holds a bronze statue of Subhas Chandra Bose, a museum of INA letters, uniforms, badges and photographs, and the original flag-hoisting site. It sits 45 km south of Imphal, minutes from Loktak, and is usually visited in the same run.
The history
Moirang was INA headquarters during the 1944 Imphal campaign. The town is equally important in Meitei culture as the home of the Moirang Kangleirol epic and the Thangjing deity.
How to reach
45 km from Imphal on NH-150. Shared sumo to Moirang ₹80–120; the memorial is a 5-minute walk from the bus stand.
Local tips
- Visit on 14 April if you can: the flag anniversary is marked with a public ceremony.
- The museum labels are in English and Manipuri; a guide is not necessary.
- Loktak's Sendra viewpoint is only 12 km further on.
