About this place
On Kheba hill above Khongjom stands the memorial to the final battle of the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891, where Major Paona Brajabashi and his men fought to the death against a far larger British column. A tall column, a bronze statue of Paona and a small museum crown the hill, with the Thoubal plains spread below.
The history
The battle was fought on 23 April 1891. Khongjom Day is observed every 23 April as a state holiday and is the most solemn civic occasion in Manipur's calendar.
How to reach
36 km from Imphal on NH-102 past Thoubal; shared sumo or bus to Khongjom (₹60–90), then a short climb.
Local tips
- The museum at the top has the original battle maps. Ask for it to be opened if it looks shut.
- Go early; the hilltop has no shade by midday.
- Waithou Lake is 12 km back toward Imphal.
