Langthabal Palace Ruins
A wooded hill of stone bases and old pine, on the university road
About this place
Langthabal, on a low hill south of Imphal near Manipur University, holds the remains of the royal capital built by Maharaja Gambhir Singh in the 1820s: stone platforms, tank embankments, a small temple and old pine and jackfruit trees. It is a quiet, uncommercial half-hour of history on the road to Loktak.
The history
Gambhir Singh shifted the capital here after the Seven Years' Devastation (1819–1826), before the court returned to Kangla.
How to reach
8 km south of central Imphal at Canchipur on NH-150; any Bishnupur-bound shared vehicle passes it.
