About this place
The principal Vaishnavite temple of Manipur, standing beside the Sana Konung (royal residence) in Imphal East. Two gilded domes rise over a long paved hall; inside are the images of Govindajee with Radha, and of Balaram and Krishna. Morning and evening aarti draw large congregations, and the temple courtyard is a central venue for Manipuri Raas Leela.
The history
Built during the reign of Maharaja Nara Singh in the 1840s, damaged by the 1868 earthquake and rebuilt by Maharaja Chandrakirti Singh; it remains the royal family's temple.

Adjacent to Kangla in Imphal East; autos from anywhere in the city cost ₹40–70.

- Remove footwear at the hall and dress modestly: covered shoulders and knees.
- Photography inside the sanctum is not permitted.
- Visit during Raas Leela nights around Kartik Purnima for the classical dance.
