Shaheed Minar
The martyrs' column at the heart of Imphal
About this place
A tall memorial column in Bir Tikendrajit Park commemorating the Manipuri soldiers and leaders who died resisting the British in the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891. The park around it is a favourite evening walking ground for Imphal families and a short stroll from Kangla and Ima Keithel.
The history
The 1891 war ended with the public hanging of Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General at Pheidapung; the minar and the park named after Tikendrajit keep that memory in the centre of the city.
How to reach
Central Imphal on BT Road, a 10-minute walk from Ima Keithel and 1.5 km from Kangla.
Local tips
- Visit on 13 August, Patriots' Day, when wreaths are laid.
- Easy to combine with Ima Keithel and Kangla in a single morning on foot.
- Evening lighting makes for good long-exposure photographs.
