About this place
Ukhrul sits at about 1,600 m and is the district headquarters of the Tangkhul Naga country: cold mornings, pine slopes, tin-roofed houses stacked on ridges, and a lively main bazar selling hill produce, smoked meat and woven shawls. It is the base for Shirui, Khangkhui and Khayang and worth a day in its own right.
How to reach
83 km from Imphal via NH-202; shared sumo from Imphal's Ukhrul stand ₹300–400, 3 hours.
Local tips
- Book accommodation ahead during the Shirui Lily Festival in May: the town fills.
- Buy a Tangkhul shawl in the bazar rather than in Imphal; the range is better.
- Nights are genuinely cold from November to February; pack accordingly.
