Khangkhui Mangsor Cave
A limestone cathedral that sheltered a village through the war
About this place
A natural limestone cave near Khangkhui village in Ukhrul, with a large main hall locals call the durbar chamber and several branching passages. Stone Age tools have been excavated here, and Tangkhul families sheltered inside during the Japanese advance of 1944. Inside it is cool, echoing and completely dark beyond the entrance chamber.
How to reach
14 km from Ukhrul town by a rough hill road, 83 km from Imphal in total. Shared sumo to Ukhrul (₹300–400), then a hired vehicle; the last 20 minutes is on foot.
Local tips
- Carry a proper torch and a spare: phone lights are not enough.
- Take a village guide; side passages are unlit and easy to lose.
- The rock is wet and slick year-round; wear grippy footwear.
