Yangoupokpi-Lokchao Wildlife Sanctuary
Tropical forest on the Myanmar frontier
About this place
A roughly 185 sq km sanctuary along the Indo-Myanmar border in Chandel, holding some of Manipur's best remaining tropical semi-evergreen forest. Hoolock gibbon, slow loris, serow, clouded leopard and a rich hornbill and butterfly fauna are recorded here. Visits need forest department clearance and a guide; there is no tourist circuit.
How to reach
Along NH-102 about 90 km from Imphal toward Moreh; contact the Divisional Forest Officer, Chandel, in advance.
Local tips
- Write to the forest office well ahead: turning up without a permit will not work.
- Leeches are a serious nuisance in the wet months; carry salt and gaiters.
- Check the current security advisory for the border districts before travelling.
