Dzukou Valley
A seamless green bowl of seasonal flowers on the Manipur–Nagaland border
About this place
Dzukou sits at about 2,450 m behind Mount Iso, a broad U-shaped valley carpeted in dwarf bamboo so even it looks mown, cut by an icy stream that runs partly underground. In late monsoon the valley fills with the Dzukou lily, aconitums and euphorbias. Most trekkers approach from Viswema or Zakhama on the Nagaland side; the Manipur approach from Mount Iso Peak in Senapati is longer, wilder and far less crowded.
The history
The valley is shared and contested between Manipur's Senapati district and Nagaland's Kohima district. A severe fire in December 2020 burned large sections of the bamboo cover, and controlled access has been enforced since.
How to reach
From Imphal take NH-2 to Senapati (62 km, shared sumo ₹200) and continue to the Mount Iso base at Makhel/Mao; the Manipur-side trek is 5–6 hours one way. Most visitors instead drive to Viswema in Nagaland (via Mao Gate) and climb 3–4 hours from there.
Local tips
- Fires are banned after the 2020 burn. Carry a gas stove, not firewood.
- Carry out every scrap of rubbish; the valley has no waste system.
- Book the rest house in advance in peak season or bring a tent; it fills up.
