Yangkhullen
Ze-Mnui
A Zeme village stacked up a cliff face, built as a fortress
About this place
Yangkhullen clings to the steep slope of the Zi mountain at roughly 1,600 m, its houses stepped up the cliff on stone bastions so that each roof sits at the level of the next doorstep. Around 180 households live here. The village gate carries enormous carved wooden doors showing a warrior with spear and hunting horn standing between the horns of a mithun. It was laid out as a fortress against raiding, and it has stayed largely outside the tourist economy.
The history
Declared a heritage village of Manipur by the then Chief Minister in 2022; as of the Jan 2026 Sangai Express report the formal heritage-village tag was still awaited.
How to reach
47 km from Maram Centre on the Maram–Peren road. Maram is on NH-2, about 90 km north of Imphal. The final approach is a rough hill road and a walk up into the village — a high-clearance vehicle is effectively required.
Local tips
- Ask permission of the village authority before photographing houses or people — this is a lived-in village, not a site.
- There is no formal accommodation; day-trip from Senapati town or Maram.
