Willong Khullen Megaliths
The Stonehenge of Manipur
Standing stones no two people ever count the same
About this place
At a clearing the Maram people call Katak Tukhum, on the edge of Willong Khullen village, dozens of megaliths stand upright in no discernible pattern. The tallest reach about seven metres and a metre thick. Local tradition attributes them to the forefathers of the present-day Maram, and the running joke — repeated by everyone who visits — is that you get a different total every time you count them. Unlike Stonehenge there is no circle and no axis; the arrangement is not understood.
The history
Sources differ on stone height — Wikipedia and senapati.nic.in say up to 7 metres; some travel sites say 7 feet. The 7-metre figure is the one on the government page.
How to reach
37 km from NH-2 at Maram, along the Maram–Peren road. Usually combined with Yangkhullen in one trip.
Local tips
- Listed as a State Protected Monument but with no on-site custodian or interpretation — go with a local guide from the village.
- Combine with Yangkhullen; both are on the same road out of Maram.
