Imphal War Cemetery
1,600 Commonwealth graves under clipped lawn
About this place
Maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, this cemetery on Imphal's northern edge holds the graves of soldiers who died in the Battle of Imphal in 1944, one of the turning points of the Second World War in Asia. The bronze plaques, terraced lawns and flowering borders make it the quietest, most ordered place in the city.
The history
Between March and July 1944 Japanese forces and the INA besieged Imphal; the Allied victory here and at Kohima was voted Britain's greatest battle in 2013.
How to reach
3 km north of central Imphal on the Dewlahland road; auto ₹60–90.
Local tips
- The register at the entrance lets you look up individual graves by name.
- Photography is allowed; keep voices low out of respect.
- The Indian Army's Imphal Peace Museum at Red Hill, 20 km west, pairs well with this.
