The easiest place in India to see a sangai up close
About this place
Set in wooded grounds at Lamphelpat on Imphal's western edge, the state zoo runs the conservation-breeding programme for the sangai and also keeps hoolock gibbon, clouded leopard, Himalayan black bear, serow and a good collection of pheasants. For visitors who cannot make the dawn trip to Keibul Lamjao, this is where the sangai is actually seen.
How to reach
7 km west of central Imphal at Lamphelpat, on the Iroisemba road; auto ₹100–140.
Local tips
- Go on a weekday: weekends are very crowded with school groups.
- The sangai enclosure is near the rear of the loop; walk anticlockwise to reach it first.
- Food stalls are limited; carry water.
