Tipaimukh
Where the Barak and Tuivai rivers meet at the state's far southwest
About this place
Tipaimukh is the confluence of the Barak and Tuivai rivers at Manipur's southwestern corner, deep in Pherzawl district and best known nationally for the long-contested dam proposal. For the traveller it is a remote river gorge of forested slopes, Hmar villages and near-total quiet, one of the hardest places in the state to reach and one of the least visited.
How to reach
Roughly 230 km from Imphal via Churachandpur and Parbung on rough hill roads; a 4WD and two days each way are realistic. Arrange transport and a local contact in advance.
Local tips
- Do not attempt this without a local contact and a confirmed place to sleep.
- Mobile coverage is patchy to absent for long stretches.
- Check district advisories; road conditions change sharply after rain.
