About this place
Tharon, near Tamenglong town, is the most extensive explored cave in Manipur: roughly 650 m of mapped passages with over thirty entrances, chambers and a stream level. Archaeological work has linked finds here to the Hoabinhian culture of mainland Southeast Asia. It is a genuine caving trip rather than a walk-through attraction.
How to reach
150 km from Imphal to Tamenglong town (shared sumo ₹400–500, 5–6 hours), then 27 km on a rough road to Tharon village. Stay overnight in Tamenglong.
Local tips
- A local guide is mandatory and sensible: the passage network is genuinely confusing.
- Wear a helmet if one is offered; ceilings are low in several sections.
- Never enter during or after heavy rain.
